When you think about a commercial production and motion design studio, you probably think of the visual arts; design and motion, color and framing. And you’re mostly correct. However; the way we view it, sound is more than 50% responsible for the success of a project, therefore sound is more than 50% of what we do. That’s why every maker in our shop has deep roots in music.
There’s a common phrase in our circle; “Great sound can make a bad image good, but a great image can never make bad-sound good” - and we believe that phrase times a million. But our interest in sound and music go to a more micro level. We prefer to build out a team of musicians who also happen to be visual artists because drummers and bassists make the best editors. They understand rhythm and beats and can feel the flow in the way someone talks, which will inform where and why they edit content the way they do. Pianists and Guitarists understand the importance of tone and know how to accentuate it. Being rooted deeply in music means you’ve more than likely studied expressing emotion through your creations. All of that study in creating emotion through music overlaps heavily with creating emotion through video and commercial production.
We always strive to execute content in a creative and stylish way; a way that communicates an emotion or an experience very vividly. We want to create something that lasts in the mind of the viewer. Step one is to have great sound and music that creates the right vibe. Then we support that with visuals that inspire thoughts and feelings to match the sound.
That’s why every team member at Storyocity is a multi-instrumentalist. Some have studied at Berklee College of Music, some come from a touring rock band, and some are just life long self-taught musicians. All of us are united under the same creed and desire to do our best work. That’s what makes Storyocity what it is, and that’s why we think sound and music are dang near everything.
